General & Current
Business:
- Currently practicing
Ophthalmology in the same practice since 1982.
- Founder and Managing
Director of the Optiklin Eye Hospital (1990) until it was sold in 1998.
- He has been doing
routine Phaco for cataracts since 1982. Did the first course in Phaco
emulsification and Radial Keratotomy for cataract and refractive surgery after
attending a course in 1987 at the meeting of the American Society of Cataract
and Refractive Surgeons, of which he is a member.
- He was one of the
first surgeons to perform the Lasik operation with the Excimer laser in South
Africa and one of the first few in the world in 1994. Started performing the
Lasik procedure after doing a fellowship in Microlamellar Keratoplasty with
Dr. Lindstrom in Mineapolis, USA 1994. He was one of the first to do PRK on
the Technolas Excimer laser in 1992 and was the first to perform Lasik on the
Nidek EC5000 Excimer laser since 1994. He is currently using the LaserSight
excimer laser.
- He was also the first
to implant the 1CU accommodative lenses in South Africa.
Professional
Registrations:
- Passed the Exam of
the American Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates in 1975.
- Registration with
the South African Medical and Dental Council as a General Practitioner in
1976.
- Full Registration
as a Medical Practitioner with the General Medical Council in London in
1977.
- Registration with
the South African Medical and Dental Council as an Ophthalmologist in 1982.
- Included in the
Specialist Register in the specialty of Ophthalmology of the British GMC.
